Sean Armstrong: “It’s A Family Club With Family Values”

When people look back on Caledonian Spartans’ 2025/26 season, the trophies will be easy to remember.

A Scottish Sunday Trophy. A Division One title. Another successful chapter in the club’s history.

But for captain Sean Armstrong, the story goes much deeper than medals and league tables.

Speaking to Footy Focus as part of our Season 25/26 Review series, Armstrong reflected on a remarkable campaign that brought success, family memories and another reminder of what makes Spartans different.

🏆 A Week To Remember

Spartans completed a memorable double by lifting the Scottish Sunday Trophy before following it up with a title-clinching victory in Division One.

For a club used to success, this achievement still stands out.

“It was an incredible week. At Spartans winning trophies is always what we do. In the eight years I’ve been here we have won six league titles.

“The Scottish Cup being added to that league title was special and a memory that will last forever for everyone in the team.”

⚽ A Team That Refuses To Give Up

Armstrong has played alongside plenty of successful Spartans teams over the years, but believes this group possesses something unique.

“Every team we’ve had at Spartans in my time here has been special, teams that on paper would be as good as and probably better than what we have now.

“But this team has a desire to win that is unmatched.

“We’ve came back from 4-0 down multiple times. They just don’t know when they are beaten and refuse to give up which is rare to find.”

That resilience became a recurring theme throughout the season and was on display time and time again during both the league campaign and cup run.

👨‍👩‍👦 More Than A Football Club

Perhaps the most revealing answer came when Armstrong was asked what Spartans being a family club means to him.

“The reason I’ve played at this team for so long is because I play with my family and friends.

“Me and three brothers won the Scottish Cup and another of my brothers played for years.”

But the Armstrong family are far from alone.

“Out with the Armstrongs you have the Carvill brothers, the McBeths, the O’Haras, the McIlkennys and the Clarks who have all played with multiple siblings amongst others.”

The family connections stretch right back to the club’s beginnings.

“Not to mention the team was started by the two McKean brothers as a way to raise money and awareness for encephalitis.

“It’s a family club with family values.”

📸 The Memories That Matter

While supporters will remember the trophy lifts and celebrations, Armstrong’s favourite memory came after the final whistle.

“Celebrating with my brothers, friends and most importantly my kids and fiancée.

“My son is at the age where he is interested in football and to take pictures with him and my two daughters and show them the rewards of a year of hard work is something that will live with me and hopefully them for life.”

It’s a reminder that football achievements are often measured by more than medals.

🔵 Looking Ahead

Having helped guide Spartans through another successful season, Armstrong hopes the standards set by this group continue for years to come.

“It’s something we’ve always dreamed about and I’m glad we could achieve such a great season.

“I’m proud of everyone that plays and supports us as we couldn’t have done it without any one of them.

“A few of us are getting older and this will hopefully pave the way for some younger players to come in, keep the heart of the team the way it is and drag the team forward to more success.”
