Premier League Returns: The Wait Is Over!

After a long summer break, the GCFA Premier League is back this Saturday as the 2026/27 campaign gets underway with six intriguing opening day fixtures.

There are plenty of fresh storylines heading into the new season. Defending champions Rutherglen Glencairn AFC begin the defence of their crown, while Oban Saints, Stirling, Tollcross AFC and Castlemilk Community FC all make their Premier League debuts. Last season’s promoted trio of Port Glasgow Boys Club, Rhu Colts AFC and Netherton Community FC will be aiming to prove they belong at this level, while established Premier League sides Glasgow Island AFC, Clydebank Red Star AFC, Bishopton AFC, Cambuslang Football Academy Milan AFC, Clydeside Athletic AFC, Rossvale Huntershill AFC and Park Sports Project AFC will all have ambitions of making their mark from day one.

With every club starting on zero points, expect an opening weekend full of excitement, nerves and plenty of talking points.

SATURDAY FIXTURES

BISHOPTON FC V OBAN SAINTS

Oban Saints begin life in the Premier League with one of the toughest away trips available as they travel to Bishopton. Having just moved to this division, they’ll be eager to show they belong at this level, but Bishopton have developed into a difficult side to beat and will be looking to use their Premier League experience to get off to the perfect start in front of their expectant crowd.

CAMBUSLANG MILAN V RHU COLTS

An intriguing contest sees established Premier League outfit Cambuslang Milan welcome promoted Rhu Colts. Rhu exceeded expectations on their way out of the Championship last season and now have the chance to test themselves immediately against experienced opposition. Cambuslang, meanwhile, will be hoping to lay down an early marker with three points on home turf.

CASTLEMILK CFC V RUTHERGLEN GLENCAIRN AFC

The champions begin their title defence against one of the league’s newest arrivals. Castlemilk couldn’t ask for a sterner introduction to Premier League football than facing Rutherglen Glencairn, who will be determined to start as they finished last season. The newcomers will have nothing to lose, though, and opening-day fixtures have a habit of producing surprises.

CLYDESIDE ATHLETIC V PGBC

Port Glasgow Boys Club earned promotion after an outstanding Championship campaign and now face another major test against Clydeside Athletic. The home side retained their Premier League status last season and know how important fast starts can be. PGBC, however, arrive full of confidence and will be keen to prove they can compete with the league’s established clubs.

NETHERTON AFC V CLYDEBANK RED STAR

Netherton’s reward for promotion is a fascinating clash with Clydebank Red Star, who have become a consistent Premier League side over recent seasons. The visitors will fancy their chances of spoiling the homecoming, but Netherton’s momentum from last season could make this one of the most competitive fixtures of the weekend.

PARK SPORTS PROJECT v TOLLCROSS FC

One of the opening day’s standout fixtures sees Premier League newcomers Tollcross travel to face one of the league’s most successful clubs. Park Sports Project have built an outstanding reputation within the GCFA and are expected to challenge once again this season. Tollcross will relish the opportunity to test themselves against one of the competition’s benchmark teams, making this a fascinating opening encounter.

The new season always brings optimism, fresh ambitions and the belief that anything is possible. For some clubs it’s about defending titles, for others it’s proving they belong, while several will be targeting a push towards the top of the table after consolidating their place in the division last year.
