Chandlers 3–6 Third Lanark AFC
Clydebank Sports Hub — On a wet, drizzly Sunday morning, Third Lanark AFC came out on top in a nine-goal thriller against Chandlers, securing a 6-3 victory after a relentless, end-to-end battle at the Clydebank Sports Hub.
The hosts caught Third Lanark cold in the opening minute, countering swiftly to smash home the opener. Lanark responded well, earning a corner shortly after and planting a header past the Chandlers goalkeeper to equalize at 1-1.
The game opened up into a frantic, end-to-end affair. Chico came close for Chandlers with a dangerous hit, while at the other end, McGill began to assert his influence. The Lanark attacker broke through twice in quick succession, forcing the Chandlers goalkeeper into a pair of brilliant saves to keep the sides level.
Controversy struck midway through the half. With the numerous pitch markings adding an unusual challenge throughout the morning, Chandlers struck against the run of play to go 2-1 ahead. Lanark protested heavily that the ball had crossed the boundary line in the buildup, but the goal stood.
Third Lanark levelled again when a ball whipped into the box was spilled by the Chandlers keeper, allowing a sharp finish from inside the six-yard box for 2-2. Lanark then squandered a golden chance to lead before half-time, firing wide with the goal at their mercy, before the Chandlers keeper pulled off another top-drawer save to keep it deadlocked at the break.
Lanark nearly grabbed the lead early in the second half when a slick free-kick routine produced a free header, only to be denied by another remarkable save. Seconds later, Chandlers had a chance of their own, but the Third Lanark goalkeeper matched his counterpart with a point-blank stop.
The breakthrough finally came when McGill timed his run to perfection to beat the offside trap, keeping his cool to slot past the keeper for 3-2.
McGill was back in the action moments later, driving to the byline before being brought down inside the box. Third Lanark’s number 9 stepped up to the penalty spot and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 4-2.
A mazy run from McGill almost put the game out of reach, only stopped by heroic last-ditch defending on the goal line. Chandlers then threw themselves a lifeline, winning a penalty at the other end following a foul in the box. The home side’s attacker dispatched the spot-kick with composure to reduce the deficit to 4-3.
Third Lanark took control in the closing stages with sharp counter-attacking football. A late break forced yet another save from the Chandlers keeper, but the number 5 was on hand to tap home the rebound for 5-3.
The final blow came from a long ball over the top. A Third Lanark player raced clear, rounded the oncoming keeper, and rolled the ball into the net to seal a dramatic 6-3 win.
