Todholm v Maryhill Milan: Perfect Records Collide at Ferguslie Park

Something has to give at Ferguslie Park.

Maryhill Milan are four from four. Todholm are three from three. The Premiership leaders face the defending champions in Sunday’s GDSFC Game of the Day — and there is a bit of history between them too.

Todholm have started their title defence by scoring an extraordinary 27 goals in three league games, while Milan have scored 18 and conceded only four.

But it’s the repeated meetings between the clubs that add another layer.

GDSFC secretary Nim, drawing on years of experience watching the league develop, describes Todholm v Milan as a “friendly competitive rivalry.”

Milan’s Jamie Butler isn’t quite convinced.

“Not really, to be honest.”

Then came the qualification.

Todholm, Jamie pointed out, might have gone unbeaten during last season’s title-winning campaign “if we hadn’t given them a doing in our league fixture.”

And just in case that wasn’t enough:

“We can’t all win a league title unbeaten, I suppose! 👀”

So… definitely no rivalry then. 😂

Behind the banter, however, Jamie is in no doubt about the size of Sunday’s test.

“I think it’s a big game, even this early in the season. We’ve both won every game so far.”

There is respect too.

“They’ve started well and they’re a decent side, so it’ll be a good test for both teams on Sunday.”

Referee David McGuire is also looking forward to being in the middle of a fixture carrying a little extra interest.

His preparation doesn’t change, but experience tells him that competitive games can sometimes feel different before the whistle even goes.

“You can actually see it in the warm-up. Teams are at it right away, taking it more seriously.”

And that’s probably where we leave it.

No manufactured grudge. No September title decider.

Just two very good GDSFC sides with perfect records, recent history and plenty to play for.
