Clinical Giffnock Cruise Past Kilsyth to Continue Fine League Form

Giffnock Soccer Centre 40s produced another impressive display to record a convincing 5-1 victory over Kilsyth 40s and continue their excellent run of league form.

Despite those setbacks, manager and players remained confident. Tactical adjustments, a debut for Martyn Joyce, and first starts of the season for Paul McKinney and JC ensured Giffnock took to the field believing they had enough quality to overcome a well-organised Kilsyth side.

The visitors settled quickly and fashioned the opening opportunity when PJ’s inviting corner found captain Derek Ure. Rising highest inside the penalty area, Ure directed a powerful header narrowly wide of the post.

Moments later, Joyce’s intelligent pass released Bhatti into space. The forward, operating in an unfamiliar striker’s role rather than his usual number ten position, beat his marker with trademark footwork before forcing an outstanding save from the Kilsyth goalkeeper.

Although both sides enjoyed spells of possession during an evenly contested opening period, it was Giffnock who eventually found the breakthrough—and in spectacular fashion.

Around the 20-minute mark, debutant Martyn Joyce collected the ball from Ure fully 40 yards from goal before unleashing an unstoppable strike that thundered in off the underside of the crossbar. It was a goal worthy of winning any match and a dream start to life in Giffnock colours. 1-0 Giffnock SC 40s !!!!

Kilsyth attempted to mount an immediate response but repeatedly found themselves frustrated by the commanding central defensive pairing of Chris Bruff and Chris Moffat. The duo were outstanding throughout the afternoon, reading the game superbly and limiting the hosts to speculative efforts, leaving goalkeeper Murray Husband with little meaningful work.

On the right flank, Craig Bonthron and Paul McKinney continually stretched the Kilsyth defence with their pace and energy, while only some exceptional defending from Sloan prevented Giffnock from extending their advantage.

Bhatti continued to trouble the home defence with intelligent movement and excellent hold-up play, bringing teammates into attacking positions throughout the half. His influence was evident again when a dangerous run ended with him being cynically brought down from behind, earning the Kilsyth defender a deserved yellow card.

Giffnock doubled their lead before the interval following an excellent move through midfield. Ure combined neatly with JC before delivering a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Bonthron. Timing his run to perfection, the attacking full-back calmly lifted his finish beyond the advancing goalkeeper to put the visitors firmly in control. 2-0 !!!!!!!

The remainder of the first half passed without further incident as Giffnock deservedly took a two-goal advantage into the interval.

Kilsyth emerged after the restart with renewed purpose and almost reduced the deficit from a free-kick 30 yards from goal, but Husband reacted sharply to produce an excellent save.

Giffnock, however, continued to create the clearer opportunities. PJ and Ledingham combined well down the left to release McKinney, whose low effort drifted narrowly wide, before Ure again displayed his passing range by finding Joyce, who fired over from distance.

An enforced substitution shortly afterwards saw Bryan Kelly replace goalscorer Craig Bonthron. Bonthron’s contribution deserved special recognition, having committed himself to the team’s cause by playing 55 minutes despite needing to leave immediately afterwards to catch a 3pm flight. 👏👏👏

The visitors remained firmly in control. Moffat ventured forward and saw a long-range effort fly just over before Ledingham’s clever through ball allowed Bhatti to twist past his defender and set up McKinney, whose effort skimmed the outside of the post.

The pressure eventually produced a third goal. Fine work from Ledingham created space for McKinney, who unselfishly slipped the ball into the path of Joyce. Showing composure beyond his years, the debutant calmly slotted home his second goal of the afternoon put Giffnock three goals up. 3-0 !!!!

Kilsyth nearly responded immediately when their lively number 14 broke clear, only for Chris Bruff to produce a magnificent last-ditch tackle that epitomised Giffnock’s defensive discipline.

Captain Derek Ure continued to dictate proceedings from midfield and was unfortunate not to claim another assist after threading a superb pass through to JC, whose well-struck effort was brilliantly saved by the impressive Kilsyth goalkeeper.

The home side eventually found a consolation goal when Husband produced another save from a long-range free-kick, only for the rebound to fall kindly to a Kilsyth attacker, who converted from close range. 3-1 !!!!

Any thoughts of a comeback were quickly extinguished.

Ledingham continued to impress from full-back and appeared to have created a clear goalscoring opportunity when his pass sent Bhatti through one-on-one. The striker looked to have been brought down by the goalkeeper, but to the disbelief of players and managment alike, the referee awarded the free-kick in Kilsyth’s favour.

Bryan Kelly was making an enormous impact after his introduction. His tireless running down the right eventually created Giffnock’s fourth goal as JC released him into space before Kelly unselfishly squared for McKinney to tap into an empty net. 4-1 !!!

Flying Full back Kelly was involved again moments later. Another driving run and dangerous delivery found Ledingham, whose initial effort was well saved, but McKinney reacted quickest to rifle home the rebound and complete his brace. 5-1 !!!

There was still time for the referee to bring an entertaining encounter to a close, confirming another impressive afternoon’s work for Giffnock Soccer Centre 40s.

Man of the Match

There were several outstanding contenders for the award. Debutant Martyn Joyce announced himself with two excellent goals, while Paul McKinney marked his first start of the season by scoring twice.

However, the accolade deservedly went to captain Derek Ure, whose influence on the contest extended far beyond the scoresheet.

Operating in a demanding box-to-box midfield role, Ure controlled the tempo of the game with intelligence, composure and relentless work rate. His distribution repeatedly unlocked the Kilsyth defence, while his leadership and willingness to cover every blade of grass set the standard for those around him.

It was the complete captain’s performance and one that underpinned another outstanding team display.

Giffnock leave Kilsyth with another three points, five well-worked goals and further evidence that this side is building real momentum as the season gathers pace.
