Maryhill Black Star manager Scott Brothers has credited his players after being named GDSFC Premiership Manager of the Month for October.
For Scott, the award reflects what his squad have delivered on the pitch.
“It’s always about the players ultimately,” he told Footy Focus. “They are the ones who need to go and put a performance in.”
He explained that, while the management team can offer information and guidance from the sideline, it’s the players who have to produce on the day.
Scott pointed to three October games that showed different sides of Black Star.
Against Pollokshields in the Scottish Cup, they raced into a 3–0 lead despite a first-half performance he felt was below their standards. After the break, they had to withstand pressure, with goalkeeper Mather making a penalty save as they dug deep to win.
He felt Black Star controlled their league meeting with Glasgow On The Ball, while the trip to Hillwood presented another challenge. Two goals down, they fought back to earn what Scott described as a deserved victory.
Black Star lost their opening two league matches, with new players finding their feet. Since then, they have put a run together and sit third in the Premiership, with four wins from six games.
Scott says competition for places is helping to keep everyone on their toes. And while he praised the contribution of many at the club, he made a point of recognising captain Allan.
“He’s a great captain and has respect of all the players and deservedly so,” Scott said.
Allan has been with him for seven or eight years and contributes on and off the pitch — although Scott joked that his skipper manages to do his head in in both places.
There was praise for another valuable talent too: organising the nights out.
