Greater Croftpark Rose finally have their first league victory of the season — and captain Ben Mitchell believes it was coming.
After feeling they deserved more from their opening two games, Saturday’s win over Burnhill gave GCR something tangible for their performances.
“Delighted with the first win, as I felt we should have taken more from the first two games than we did. Time to kick on now starting Tuesday.”
It wasn’t entirely straightforward.
GCR had established a 2–0 advantage before a difficult spell either side of half-time allowed Burnhill back into the contest at 2–2.
For Mitchell, the message among the players was simple: stay calm and get back to what had put them in control.
“The boys knew we were the better team, but we had a bad ten minutes either side of half-time letting them back into it.
“Keep calm and get back to playing how we played for the first 30 or 35 minutes, which we did.”
And despite seeing a two-goal advantage disappear, the captain says the belief that GCR would win never went with it.
“There was no doubting we were still going to win that game. We were creating plenty of chances and playing some nice football.”
Perhaps the bigger story, though, is what has been developing behind the results.
Mitchell admits pre-season wasn’t always straightforward, but believes GCR are now beginning to look like a settled squad.
“The squad has really come together in the last month. Pre-season was a bit up and down, but we now have a settled squad that’s been greatly improved in recent weeks with a few new additions.”
The first win is on the board.
Now, as their captain puts it, it’s time for Greater Croftpark Rose to kick on.
